Worcester Bosch Fault Codes Explained: The Ones Homeowners See Most

Worcester Bosch boilers show a fault code, usually a letter and number followed by a three-digit code, when something stops them working. The ones homeowners see most are EA 227 (the boiler hasn’t detected a flame, often an ignition or gas supply issue), CE 207 (low water pressure), E9 224 (overheat protection) and A1 280 (a water flow problem). Low pressure is often a quick fix. Most others need a Gas Safe engineer.

Always check your model’s manual, as codes vary between Worcester ranges. Our Worcester page explains how we service and repair them. We cover homes across East Kent, including Whitstable and Herne Bay.

Common Worcester Bosch codes

Code Usual meaning Safe checks
EA 227 No flame detected / ignition failure Check gas is on; in frost, check condensate pipe; one reset
CE 207 Low water pressure Top up to the recommended pressure
E9 224 Overheat safety cut-out Check radiator valves are open; engineer if it repeats
A1 280 Low water flow or circulation problem Check pressure; engineer if it persists
C6 215 Fan fault Engineer needed

EA 227: the most common

This means the boiler tried to light but didn’t detect a flame. Check:

  • The gas supply is on at the meter
  • Other gas appliances are working
  • Prepayment meters have credit
  • In freezing weather, the condensate pipe isn’t frozen

Reset once. If it returns, call an engineer. It may be an ignition electrode, gas valve or flame sensor fault.

CE 207: low pressure

The gauge will be low, often below 1 bar. Top up with the filling key or loop as shown in the manual, then reset. If pressure keeps dropping, there may be a leak or a faulty relief valve.

E9 224 and A1 280: heat and flow

These point to the boiler getting too hot or water not circulating properly. Causes include closed valves, sludge in the system, a pump problem or low pressure. If they repeat, an engineer should investigate. Sludge-related problems may need a powerflush.

When to stop and call an engineer

  • Any code that returns after one reset
  • Fan, gas valve, sensor or circuit board codes
  • Water leaking from the boiler
  • A smell of gas: call 0800 111 999

Never remove the casing. Only a Gas Safe engineer should work inside the boiler. Book through our servicing and repairs page.
